City representatives Eddie Holguin Jr. and Rachel Quintana were in Washington, D.C., to meet with members of the Obama administration and attend a reception with the president. They are members of People For the American Way Foundation’s Young Elected Officials Network who were selected to come to the White House to discuss issues facing states and municipalities. The network provides support and training for over 600 state, county and city elected officials from all 50 states.
Gov. Rick Perry granted a request by El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar to extend her Declaration of Local Disaster for Drought and Wildfire Danger.
The El Paso County Commissioners Court in a 3-2 vote approved a ban on the sale, use and possession of all fireworks in El Paso County. Perry extended the ban until 7 a.m. July 5.
El Paso, currently experiencing an extreme drought, is one of more than 90 counties in Texas attempting to ban the sale, use and possession of fireworks altogether.
Henry Mineros, RN, has been appointed director of emergency services at Del Sol Medical Center. Before his promotion, he worked as the emergency services operations coordinator, charge nurse and triage nurse.
Mineros earned his bachelor’s of science degree and master’s of Business Administration in Health Care Systems from the University of Texas at El Paso. He will oversee the education, development and maintenance of Del Sol’s emergency department and ER Fast-Track Services.
U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes announced that the National Science Foundation will award a $600,000 federal grant to the University of Texas at El Paso to increase the number of minority students pursuing doctoral degrees in the science, technology, engineering and math fields.
The UTEP School of Nursing is one of 63 schools to receive funding to award scholarships from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing through the RWJF New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program. Grants will be given to students underrepresented in the field of nursing.
The program helps nursing schools expand student capacity in accelerated baccalaureate and master’s programs.
Nursing students Aracely Hernandez, Jason A. Longwell, Edith J. Perales, Kenneth A. Stice and Heather J. Tantimonaco have been awarded a $10,000 scholarship for the Nursing Fast Track Program next fall.
