For the past four years, the world has been a classroom for Parker and Sabrina Johnson of Saratoga Springs, who had the opportunity to experience what they had only read about in textbooks.

Along with their parents, Marc and Angie, the Johnsons sailed along the Eastern United States and Mexico aboard the 40-foot Manta catamaran for a three to five-year adventure.

"We set out to go as long as it was fun and four years was right," Marc said.

The family rented their house for the duration and returned just before school started last September.

Marc, a dentist, sold his practice and Angie quit her job as a certified public accountant, working from home doing hospital audits around the country, to embark on the sailing expedition.

Marc called it a "leap of faith."

"We knew we wanted to share the experience with the kids, and we knew the golden opportunity was when they were self-sufficient but before they become teenagers. There's that magical window to go cruising with kids," he said.

They set off from Newport, R.I., on their boat, "Side By Side," in September 2006 and cruised that first year to the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic, heading east to Puerto Rico, the American Virgin Islands, St. Martin's and Antigua.

They sailed until the start of hurricane season the following June and put their boat in storage, flying back to Saratoga Springs for Sabrina's first communion and visiting extended family in Michigan until it was time to put the catamaran back in the water a few months later.

They sailed different parts of the ocean over the four years, taking a break from the stormy seas during the summer months to resume in September. They ultimately sailed as far as Mexico.

The Johnson children, then ages 10 and 8, initially had no idea what their parents had in store for them.

"We just laid it on them when we came home from work one day. We said, ‘We're going cruising,'" Marc recalled.

Parker and Sabrina had sailed with their parents off Cuttyhunk Island in Massachusetts, but they didn't see taking a four-year chunk

out their lives to explore the tropics as a thrilling adventure.

"We didn't know what the Caribbean would be like, and we didn't want to leave our friends," Sabrina said.

They changed their minds as they got to Georgetown in the Bahamas, a cruising spot where sailing families come to meet. They made friends with kids from all over the world and would visit Georgetown two more times during the next four years.
