But there’s more to remote banking than getting cash at the grocery store, checking balances from a home PC and paying bills online. Banks have gone mobile. Mobile banking is the hottest thing to happen to the industry in decades. In fact, according to Mercatus LLC, a financial market researcher, some consumers are ditching their brick and mortar bank for a mobile-friendly one. In a recent survey of smartphone users, 43 percent said they’d consider switching banks because of remote check deposit, eliminating one of the last reasons to head to an ATM or local branch. “You’ve taken the mobile device and given me the ability to deal with the four checks that have been sitting in my drawer for months,” said Teresa Epperson, a partner at Mercatus. “Think of how much time that saves you.” How else can your phone help you save time and money when it comes to banking? Here are ways to go mobile. Text banking: You don’t need a smartphone to access basic mobile banking. Most banks let customers check balances by texting “BAL” to a special number. Texters can also find nearby ATMs, view recent activity and disable text banking. There are also text alerts to tell you if a balance is getting low or a payment is due. Bank of America, for example, offers more than 50 text alerts. Mobile banking: Most major banks offer an iPhone, Android and Blackberry app to help customers check balances, transfer money and find nearby ATMs. Some standouts: Discover Bank’s Money Messenger allows customers to freely send money to others using PayPal even if the customer is not a PayPal user. Chase and Bank of America offer native iPad apps for that bigger-screen experience. Arkansas’ Southern Bancorp introduced Shake&Bank, an iPhone app aimed at kids. Shake the phone and a cartoon piggy bank shows the account’s balance. Online bank ING Direct added PayPal’s Bump service to its app to allow users to transfer money by touching two phones together.
