Brown, Schlesinger focused on winning Macon council seat

Brown, 43, grew up in and near Macon and said the city has been missing great opportunities while the government lacks in accountability. Schlesinger, 60, said he’s got a good vision for how Macon can thrive within Middle Georgia.

Brown said he wants to mesh a City Council seat with his efforts to create a sustainable Macon.

“I’m out in the forefront of trying to advance industry, jobs, and how Macon can get ahead without raising taxes,” he said.

Brown faults Schlesinger in part for his opposition to the July 2010 special purpose local option sales tax. Such SPLOST money is critical to creating improvements that can attract industry, but it has been left on the table while surrounding counties keep their SPLOSTs in place, he said.

Such funding could help improve recreation. Brown wants recreational programs that could provide science tutoring, tennis and other structured activities that would aid children and reduce crime.

“We need to embrace (the concept of) community like it was when I was a kid, where not only my mom was my parent, but my neighbor was a parent,” he said.

If a November 2011 SPLOST referendum passes, Bibb County would take responsibility for recreation away from Macon next year.

Brown, a computer and energy consultant, said he’s been working on information technology projects at Fort Benning and trying to build a solar power plant in Georgia. Some of those technologies need to be explored here, he said, including methane production at the city landfill and using algae to produce energy.

Methane from the landfill is now piped off by Cherokee Brick & Tile Co., which uses it for its kilns.

Brown said he also wants to pursue more recycling efforts.

“Create jobs now,” Brown said. “Create a viable, sustainable Macon through these initiatives. We’re still at a time when Macon needs solutions.”

Brown said he also wants to increase accountability and communication with constituents. Council members need to explain why they said one thing and did another, he said, pointing to Schlesinger’s opposition to last year’s SPLOST vote.

Brown said this year’s SPLOST vote should build new courthouses and centralize government, which could help improve follow-up supervision with drug abusers and others.

This is Brown’s first run for a political office, but he said he’d been part of an ironically named volunteer group called “Bad Boys” that would wash cars, hand out literature and engage in community activism. Many of those people went on to become attorneys, police officers and firefighters. Few stayed as Macon declined.
