Big trucks and big bikes bring big and little fans

SAGINAW TWP. — Big trucks bring boys and girls of all ages.

Ken Claus, 71, of Saginaw Township, knows it, and that’s why he and his wife, Donna, brought their three grandchildren to Haithco Park in Saginaw Township for a big trucks/big bikes showcase.

“You get boys and trucks together, and it’s a good combination,” Claus said.

The couple told their 3 grandsons, Jacob, 7, Joshua, 6, and Caleb, 5, that they were going on an adventure. Joshua Claus said he especially liked the yellow fire truck brought by the Kochville Township Fire Department because “they put out fires and help people.”

About 200 parents and kids were expected to visit about 40 trucks and motorcycles, said Stephanie Wirtz, outdoor recreation and event coordinator for the Saginaw County Parks and Recreation Commission.

“Kids really enjoy crawling in the vehicles and honking the horns,” she said.
Vehicles included fire, propane, tow, mosquito-sprayer trucks, a trash vehicle and a Saginaw County Sheriff’s truck.

Don Ramos, driver for Best Towing of Saginaw, made sure to wake up early to help clean up two of the tow trucks the company brought.

Some kids recognized him, and he said it was nice to be known for what he does.

“They start to put faces with somebody that they see every day,” he said.
Motorcycles were added last year.

Brady Steckert, 60, of Saginaw Township brought his 1978 Honda Goldwing.

He has been trying to sell the bike and said it was a good opportunity to let kids have some fun on it.

“I thought, ‘I’m not doing anything,’ ” he said. “Kids love the sidecar.”

Greyson Lampi, 4, said his favorite part was hopping on one of the bikes and pretending to drive it.

“I just like driving them,” he said.

Greyson traveled to the event from Midland with his brother Jacob, 1, and mother, Shea, 32.

They circled through the event twice so the boys could look at every part of the trucks and bikes.

“We read truck books every night,” Shea Greyson said. “It’s a chance to actually touch the trucks and see them.
