He said not to rub or touch the eye.Though the Office of the State Fire Marshal recommends residents attend a public fireworks display rather than setting off their own, the department provides these safety tips for individuals who insist on using consumer fireworks:
Purchase the fireworks in the location where you intend to discharge them. Check with the local municipality to determine what fireworks are considered legal for use in that area. Read and follow label warnings and instructions. Do not allow small children to use fireworks. Do not consume alcoholic beverages while using fireworks. Have a bucket of water or hose available. Do not re-light a fuse. Bomb squad commander and Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Jack Waldner, of the Office of the State Fire Marshal, said sparkler injuries can be even more detrimental for people who have long hair or may be wearing hairspray.
While people of all ages need to be careful, providing a young child with a sparkler doesn't make sense, said Dr. Dean Fiergang, pediatric ophthalmologist at Dankner-Fiergang Eye Associates, which has four locations, two of which are in Westminster and Eldersburg.
"At what age do you give a child a match and let them go play?" asked Fiergang, who was representing the Maryland Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons at the event Thursday.
