Prexies take mature approach to football season
Washington High School football coach Mike Bosnic looks at the players who will fill the Prexies roster for the upcoming season, and he likes what he sees.The skill positions possess a mixture of speed, size and toughness. There's a Division I prospect along the defensive line. The linebackers seek contact, and the secondary attacks. There are state track medalists and athletes who've played varsity basketball since ninth grade.
It's a group that generated buzz within the Wash High community since their days in youth leagues. It's also a group with the potential to compete in the rugged Class AA Century Conference with the likes of South Fayette, Seton-La Salle, Keystone Oaks and Steel Valley.
That word - potential - is a scary one for coaches, Bosnic included. A former player at Pitt, Bosnic knows it takes a lot more to be successful in football than potential.
"I think these guys know that potential doesn't mean much if you don't bring a team-first attitude," Bosnic said Sunday afternoon, one day before Washington and all fall sports teams in the PIAA can conduct their first official practice. "In football, you can't have weak links. You can have a couple great individuals who are weak teammates, and it can really hurt the team."
For all Washington's potential, Bosnic is impressed with how players have matured and taken leadership roles since the end of the 2010 season.
The Prexies faced a brutal front end of the schedule a year ago with a youthful team, struggled early, but fared better over the final month to finish 5-5.
"The guys have continued to improve. What's impressing me is they have a more team-oriented attitude," Bosnic said. "The past couple years, some of those guys might have been a little immature."
Bosnic pointed to the senior leadership provided by Joe Phillips, who is drawing Division I interest as a defensive end and at fullback. He's also encouraged by the progress of junior quarterback Josh Wise and classmate Jaylin Kelly, part of Wash High's backfield and a starting linebacker.
"Those guys are beginning to show they're good football players," Bosnic said. "They've continued to mature. It's a good foundation to get started.
