Broward 'Mummers' strut and string their stuff
Mummers are costumed performers. The idea originated when Swedish pioneers landed in Philadelphia and continued their New Year’s Day tradition of shooting down the fictitious Greek god of evil, “King Momas,’’ in the sky. People would then flood the streets in celebration. They’ve paraded down the streets of Philadelphia since 1901.
Get out your banjo and accordion, strap on that cowboy hat, and wave those jazz hands.

For 34 years, the members of the Broward County Mummers String Band have been getting the elderly to kick up their walking canes and feel the rhythm.
“It’s the darn music,” said Jan Daisy-Little, the group’s vice president. “Once it starts, you have no control.”
The Mummers play Dixieland and Riverboat music, giving new beats to older songs like .
The band comprises banjos, keyboards, drums, glockenspiels, saxophones, accordions and bass guitars.
“It’s like going back in time,” said Hector Bayron, 58, who drives over an hour every Thursday to watch the Mummers rehearse at the Moose Lodge in Tamarac. “You won’t find this anywhere else.”
Under large wooden beams that frame the makeshift stage, the band runs through a few numbers in front of a backdrop of silver and gold foil curtains. A few strutters pick up multi-colored umbrellas and dance through the audience, handing out beads and hugs to individuals as they sing along, clap, and chomp on hamburgers and fries.
In addition to their weekly practices, the Mummers play about 40 gigs a year across Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. They usually perform at retirement communities and assisted-living facilities but have also played aboard cruise ships and for city events.
About four years ago, they played at a Lakeland woman’s funeral, as she requested in her will. “The first couple numbers were extremely awkward,” musical director Mel Marmer said. “But then we saw what it did to the group. They were so happy.”
The Broward County Mummers, established in 1977, started out as a marching band, but evolved into a concert band 15 years ago.
“We used to march, but now we’re lucky we can walk,” said Marmer, 73, of Delray Beach.
The band members’ average age is 78. Its youngest member is 55, and its oldest is 86. The vast majority of the 41 musicians and 10 strutters, people who dance and get the audience involved, are retired.
