The 2011 Nike U.S. Open of surfing is the perfect summer festival.

With a stage erected on the sand at Huntington Beach, surfing, skating, biking, and many Southern Californians cavort around beautiful swimwear, it is essentially the closest thing to heaven on earth. Last night in Los Angeles alternative rock gurus Country Death carried out a series of exciting catchy cuts for the packed crowd, just before Jimmy Eat World. Frontman Nick is still a long delighted with the whole experience the next morning.

"Honestly, I think it was the most fun I ever had to play a show," he smiles.

It's most likely the most fun any one in attendance had at a concert too! Today, fans can catch Surfer Blood and MGMT on the beach late this afternoon in Huntington.

Dead Country singer Nick Long spoke to ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolor author Rick Florino about the 2011 Nike Us Open of Surfing , "Boring Love", and more in this exclusive interview…

How was your performance at the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing last night?

It was amazing. Honestly, I think it was the most fun I've ever had playing a show. I play a lot of shows, so it was pretty cool. There were a few thousand people there, and everybody seemed to be having a great time. It was a beautiful day, and the star was overlooking this sea of people on the beach. It was the most incredible view from a stage. Everybody was in a good mood having a blast. We feed off the crowd, and it felt great. We weren't standing on the sand, but the stage was setup on the sand. There was a half-pipe, and areas with skating and BMX riding going on. Obviously, it's a surfing event too.

Have you ever played on the beach before?

I've never played on the beach. I've done some Warped Tour dates near the beach. In New Jersey, there's one on some old boardwalk. In Ventura, Warped takes place by the beach. I've never played literally on the sand before.

How did you get hooked up with the US Open of Surfing ?

We do some work with Hurley from time to time. Our buddy there invited us to come play the show, and we couldn't say no. It's a different vibe like a festival. Everyone is there to have fun. It's not a super serious event.

Do you surf?

I surfed when I was a little kid. I got my first guitar when I was eight-years-old, and everything else just didn't matter anymore.
