Quad bikes most popular items stolen from Cumbria's farms

Quad motorcycles top a hit list of the property most often stolen in the Cumbrian countryside, new findings show.

Livestock and oil and diesel follow behind on a chart of the items most targeted by crooks in the rural parts of the county.

The findings come from insurer NFU Mutual, which says criminals raiding farms in the north west of England stole an estimated £2.6 million worth of tractors, vehicles, animals and equipment last year.

Nationally, almost two in three of its branches reported an increase in rural crime.

The findings come in the week police said suspects could be banned from parts of the Cumbrian countryside as part of efforts to tackle thefts.

Officers revealed £170,000 of property was stolen during 53 raids in the rural north of the county during June.

NFU Mutual says its branches were asked the main reasons why they thought thieves targeted the countryside.

Forty one per cent said the sparse nature of the countryside made it difficult to police.

Thirty two per cent claimed there was less chance of thieves being seen.

While 23 per cent thought relaxed attitudes towards security could be a factor.

David Jones, NFU Mutual agent in Cockermouth, said: “Theft and crime in rural areas is highly organised and is a very real threat at all times of the year.

“Thieves in our area won’t just target tractors, Land Rovers and farm machinery.

“They can also make money from stealing and selling smaller items like quad bikes and power tools that can be stolen and sold on in the blink of an eye.”

Mr Jones said people should make sure quad motorcycles and power tools are kept in a locked building when they are not being used.

“Unless they’re marked and identifiable, many farm and household items can be difficult to trace but very simple for criminals to sell,” he added. “It’s all about taking small steps to make life much harder for rural criminals.

“Making outbuildings more secure is an effective deterrent and taking the time to mark your more valuable items will make it much easier to trace the criminal and return your property.”

Quad bikes, farming equipment, tools, fuel, metal and livestock were among the items taken in and around Brampton, Longtown, Penrith, Appleby and Alston in June.
