Local racing: Sprint-car organizers listen to fans
Fans spoke and Sprint-car Speedweek organizers listened.
A new format was tried during the Keystone Cup sprint-car series over Memorial Day weekend. The drivers liked it, but apparently the fans did not.
The fastest qualifiers started at the front of the heat races and then the top two finishers in the heat races redrew pills for feature starting spots. Also, the feature line-up was based on heat race finishes, so it allowed drivers with bad qualifying laps to make it up in the heat races.
The four feature races held during KC were all won from the front row with no passes for the lead. Was this coincidence or a result of the system? I believe it was a coincidence, however, the format was changed for this week's Speedweek series.
"I knew when we did it that the drivers would love it and the fans would hate it," said Bryan Householder, who sets the line-ups for the Speedweek races. "Every race I went to after Keystone Cup, fans asked me what format was going to be used for
Speedweek and they hoped it wasn't the same."
Speedweek crowds are typically some of the biggest of the season for local tracks, so organizers knew they had to make a change to keep the paying fans happy.
The fact is almost everybody in the 410 sprints has the same stuff, so the front row starters are hard to beat, no matter the format. Track conditions also play a big part in how much passing is done.
The traditional handicapping system has produced several front row winners this season with no passing for the lead. Unfortunately, the blame cannot be place
on any system, but on the rules that have made the sprint-cars so equal.
Even under this week's system, Daryn Pittman started on the pole and led every lap at Bedford. Cory Haas did race from ninth to win the Speedweek opener. Tyler Walker won Grandview from fourth starting spot.
PAUL MILLER PASSES York County Racing Club (YCRC) president Paul Miller passed away from a heart attack on Sunday morning. Miller, 82, of York, was a successful local racer before becoming the one and only president the YCRC ever had since its founding in June of 1979.
Miller began racing in the 1950s and competed through the early 1970s scoring wins at Lincoln and Susquehanna.
With Miller in charge, the YCRC has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind in the country. He was the driving force behind the club's building, the YCRC Hall of Fame and the Injured Drivers Fund.
