Dungarvan in world's top 10 speed venues

The 2009 Speed World Cup has been presented to winners Anders Bringdal of Sweden and Valerie Ghibaudo of France after last month’s weather-hit European championships finale in Dungarvan.

Wind on the very last day brought finally results for the speed windsurfers and kiteboarders. There was just enough time to complete a few fast runs along the speedstrip, with the fastest speed of the event set by Dave Williams (GBR, Best) at 44.2 knots over 250m.

Cork’s Pearse Geaney, two-times Irish Slalom Champion came in fifth, and Dubliner Steve Flanagan finished a very respectable third. The event came to an end with a prize-giving ceremony in Dungarvan Harbour Yacht Club. Event organiser Martin Waldron said that while “the winds weren’t ideal… we were delighted with the fantastic speeds that were achieved on the course on the last day.

“Due to the sand spit and the lack of currents in Dungarvan Harbour it would be ranked in the top 10 speed sailing venues in the world. We are thrilled with the local support the Championships received in Dungarvan, and the number of people that came out to join in the free introductory lessons to Wind Surfing, Kite Surfing and various water sports was brilliant. There is obviously a huge appetite out there for adventure,” he added.
