Without help, it's lights out for youth program
DUNEDIN — A youth football and cheerleading team wants the city to contribute roughly $90,000 for new stadium lights for its practice field.
For years, the Dunedin Junior Falcons have spent three or four autumn evenings a week practicing under the lights on Dunedin High School's practice field.
But last fall, the wooden poles that supported those lights deteriorated to the point where the Pinellas County School Board took them down for safety reasons.
Team officials have tried to solve the problem themselves, including partnering with various agencies to try to replace the lights at a reduced rate. But the endeavor still proved to be too expensive.
Without help, Junior Falcons organizers say they'll have to end the program, which began in the 1960s and currently serves about 400 youths from ages 4 to 14.
"Our practice field is utilized Monday-Friday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., which causes concern for the safety of our children after dark," team president Carolyn Peake wrote in a letter to the city last month.
"This youth sports program cannot survive without permanent light fixtures."
The City Commission will discuss the request at its public meeting at 6:30 tonight.
Commissioner Julie Ward Bujalski supports the nonprofit team's request for one-time assistance.
As is common among cities, she said Dunedin has been supporting its local nonprofit Little League and soccer teams with field maintenance, lights, concession stands, parking and other expenses for years.
However, officials say the Falcons have largely been self-funded, even investing $100,000 to construct a concession stand, storage area and restrooms at Dunedin High.
Roughly 15 years ago, the city helped the team forge a partnership with the School Board for use of Dunedin High's fields. The city contributes about $3,500 annually toward use of the school's main field for Saturday games, documents show.
The city also spent $4,200 renting portable lights last season. But team officials said those won't work long-term because they're not tall enough and ended up blinding the kids as they looked up to catch passes.
Bujalski said the team is a longtime community tradition that "keeps kids off the street and keeps them busy." She said her son was a Falcon for five years, but will discontinue his participation next season and play soccer instead.
"I don't have a problem with providing a lighting system for them," Bujalski said, "because we haven't had to do all of the other things we've done for other sporting organizations.
