CPW Printers Pietermaritzburg in awe of latest Polar cutter

City Printing Works trading as CPW Printers has been in business since 1915 and is located in Pietermaritzburg. The company is run by directors Mark Backhouse, Craig Backhouse, Colin Maher and Robin Barnes and is one of the leading medium sized print shops in KwaZulu-Natal. CPW specialises in wide-ranging design, printing and finishing and has a client base which includes banks, provincial and local government, as well as general commercial businesses, the tourist industry, legal, medical and accounting professions, educational institutions, advertising agencies and graphic designers. CPW Printers has just recently installed a Polar 115XT from Heidelberg Graphic Systems.

‘The purchase of the Polar 115XT cutter is part of a programme to continuously upgrade the production capabilities, as well as improve efficiencies with appropriate leading edge technologies,’ stated Robin Barnes, financial director of CPW. ‘Updating equipment on an on-going basis has also been necessary to increase in-house capability, to improve efficiency, and to meet customer’s demands for quicker turnaround times and high quality printing and finishing,’ he added.

The Company has three guillotines in the factory. The new guillotine replaces a Polar guillotine, which has been with the company for the last 50 years and is still in a very good working order. It gets used on a daily basis and with some modifications, has been, up till now, CPW Printers’ number one cutter.

‘The new Polar 115XT cutter is a beautifully engineered and manufactured machine. With significantly quicker computer assisted set-up times and touch screen operation, efficiency is improved. Air tables which make the handling of paper faster and easier will also enable faster and higher precision cutting,‘ said Barnes. The Polar 115XT cutter is part of the Polar high-speed cutter range and is the top-of-the-line model. It boasts a 15-inch colour display and touch screen for sophisticated cutting jobs, offering specific programmable parameters, label and distortion correction as well as an extended selection of optional equipment.

‘It was a close call between buying a Polar cutter and another German competitor. Both are excellent machines and both offer excellent value for money and have good local support.

Paper cutters and trimmers come in all shapes, sizes and designs. What makes one trimmer better than another? A lot of it has to do with the build quality, reputation and price. To begin with, about 90%+ of Carl’s paper trimmers are what’s known as rotary paper cutters. They use a small pizza cutter-like blade that rolls around in a specially designed cutting head. This wheel rolls across paper, cutting it in the process. Rotary paper cutters are known for being accurate and ideal for use in photography, and perfect for scrapbooking purposes. Carl also makes a few different 2 and 3-hole paper punches as well as an entry-level corner rounder.

I would consider Carl to be on par with most entry to mid-level paper cutters, such as Fiskars. The quality isn’t up to high-volume cutting levels, like Rotatrim, but they work great for home and small business use.

So is the Carl line of paper cutters perfect for everyone? I wouldn’t recommend Carl paper trimmers for print shops, copy centers or larger businesses, but I would certainly recommend them for home use, school use, small-business use and other occasional cutting projects.
