Warning: Area Waterways Are Fast, Cold

COLOMA, Calif. -- The roar of the water is furious. The water along the American River in Coloma is running as fast as 6,500 cubic feet per second.

That is enough water to fill an Olympic size swimming pool every 13 seconds.

"We have not seen water flows like this for a while," said river guide Greg Dunkle.

The near record snow fall is creating an amazing runoff for the area rivers and streams.

The runoff is creating fantastic rafting conditions, but guides warn bigger rapids mean bigger dangers for those on the river.

"You certainly do not want to be out here without somebody that knows what they are doing," Dunkle said.

It is a late start to the rafting season, but it's expected to last later into summer this year.

The section of the river next to the American River Resort in Coloma is called "Troublemaker." It's earned its reputation over the years with a swift, rocky section of river that is exciting but can be dangerous.

Rafting guides come to this river from all over the country. They are learning from area experts how to guide boats down rivers like this.

"We want people to enjoy the river. It is a treasure to our community, but we want them to be safe and smart," said El Dorado County Sgt. Jim Beyers.

"If you are new to the river, come out with an expert, a guide that knows this river in and out, " Beyers said.

On Wednesday the El Dorado Irrigation District issued a warning about the area rivers and waterways. They urge a cautious approach to local streams and rivers.

As the weather continues to warm up, the snow at higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada is continuing to melt.

Due to the considerable snowpack this year, it is anticipated that local streams and rivers— including Caples Creek and the South Fork and Silver Fork American River— will be noticeably higher and colder for a longer period than usual.

These factors will likely make recreation areas and trail crossings along streams hazardous and unusable well into the summer recreation season.

It is not just the rapids officals are worrying about. They stress that even the calm portion of the river has a strong under current this time of year.

The water temperatures are still the same.
