The casting director got a kick out of that, he said a lot of kids that were (auditioning) never read the book.” “Actually, I almost didn’t get the role because the producer had looked through about 3,000 young men, about a few hundred in the major cities, about 500 in Los Angeles and then quite a few in Missouri and others throughout the country and they didn’t find who they wanted as Tom Sawyer,” Whitaker, now 51-years-old, said. “My agent, Mary Grady, who was a pretty well-known child agent, told them that she had the only Tom Sawyer and that was Johnny Whitaker.” “So here I go, planning to meet with them, not planning to take the job, but for a future possible job down the road. They screen-tested me with Jeff East, they screen-tested me with Jodie Foster, they screen-tested me with a couple of other young men and they brought me up with my parents to the top room of (the audition building) and said, ‘Johnny, we’d like to offer you the role of Tom Sawyer’,” Whitaker said. “And I said, ‘No, thank you. I already have plans this summer.’” “What we had agreed is that my uncle would come and pick me up at the Boy Scout camp and take me directly to the nearest airport where I’d fly out and then get to the Los Angeles airport where I’d then fly to Kansas City,” Whitaker said. “I grew up going to New York and loving the musicals, thinking I love musicals and was able to go to New York and see the ones on Broadway. When I found that the Sherman Brothers were writing and doing the music (for Tom Sawyer), I said there’s no question, I’ve got to do it.
