Shopping, history, motorcycles and more around the corner in Dandridge

Road trips have long been synonymous with summer, back roads and adventures. But road trips don't have to take us miles from home. Some of the best places to visit can be right under our noses.

The city of Dandridge is one of those places. Named for George Washington's wife, Martha Dandridge Washington, and established in 1783, it is the second-oldest city in Tennessee. Along the banks of the French Broad River, it originally catered to travelers and businessmen. Many of the inns and taverns in which they stayed still stand.

Dandridge is a city with an intriguing past. During the Civil War, both Union and Confederate officers used the Hynds house on Gay Sreet as their headquarters and as a hospital. A fire in 1911 wiped out one whole side of Gay Street. Thanks to a water brigade, the Hynds house was spared.

Today, Dandridge is recognized as a Main Street community by the National Trust for Historical Preservation. From the history lover to the shopper, from the water sports enthusiast to the ghost hunter, Dandridge offers something for just about everyone. Summertime may be right around the corner, but Dandridge is just up the road.

What to visit

The Revolutionary Graveyard is on Main Street, directly across from the Dandridge visitors center. The graveyard contains the graves of early citizens and Revolutionary War veterans.

The Jefferson County Historical Museum is just up the street inside the Jefferson County courthouse. The marriage certificate of Davy Crockett and Polly Finley is displayed here. So are artifacts and memorabilia from life in the 1800s and 1900s. Arrowheads, chewing gum, bowls, military uniforms and letters are preserved and on display in this free museum.

Just upstairs, the volunteers that staff the Archives Office maintain records and documents from 1792. They are happy to answer questions about the town and the people who lived here.

The Smoky Mountain Motorcycle Museum is directly across Main Street from the courthouse. It boasts more than 30 motorcycles from around the world, including a 1921 Triumph-Werke Nurnberg (TWN) made in Germany. Derek Smith, who co-owns the museum with his wife, Amber, got his first motorcycle as a gift from his father when he was 12. In addition to the bikes, the Smiths use the museum to showcase their collection of 1950s memorabilia. As Derek said, "Anyone can have a building with bikes in it, but how cool (is it) to have it themed and in an old setting?" The Smoky Mountain Motorcycle Museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. Call 865-940-1414 for information.

You have to have a valid drivers license usually a credit card as well.

I would get an international license so you have no problems getting a rental or if pulled over explaining what your ID is at a station!!

You would have to look into the region you are going to and find out what shops are there to rent from if any. Cities are better luck at renting them than a village.
