From basketball to business
It’s very common for children who grow up playing sports to idolize the athletes they see on TV and aspire for the same type of stardom. There’s also no denying that sports can be highly instrumental in helping a young student earn college scholarships, which is why the purpose of the Basketball to Business Summit is not to discourage any child from dreaming about playing in the pros. All proceeds from the Basketball to Business Summit will benefit Metamorphoses, Inc., a local non-profit organization that helps troubled youth turn their lives around with evidence-based programs that encourage positive thinking, sound decision-making and healthy self-esteem. Funded with grants from the Target Foundation, Just Care Family Network and Tennessee Voices for Children; Metamorphoses, Inc. works in conjunction with the Shelby County Juvenile Court.Temple Of Deliverance - News

The break only lasted a matter of seconds, but to a panel of five city officials and the crowd of about 70 residents who gathered in the Temple of Deliverance Worship Center Church, it seemed to stretch for minutes. No one interrupted the silence that

Faith in Memphis | Blog | A chance to grieve J.O. Patterson Jr. as ...
Those who knew James Oglethorpe Patterson Jr. best and loved him most — his wife, children, grandchildren and church family — gathered Sunday morning and again Sunday evening at Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ to grieve his passing the day before and to remember his blessings in the decades before.
They weren’t there to honor J.O. Patterson Jr., the historic political figure who served 20 days as the city’s first African-American mayor and 20 years as one of its most iconoclastic city council members, a state legislator and would-be congressman who riled and at times defied white and black colleagues and voters alike.
They weren’t there to pay tribute to Bishop J.O. Patterson Jr., grandson of the founder of the denomination, son of the founder of their church, cousin to the world-famous presiding bishop, the General Assembly chairman and church attorney whose legal training and legislative experience steadied the Church of God in Christ through some turbulent times.
No, the several hundred Saints who lined pews and leaned against pulpits Sunday came to express their thanks and praise for J.O. Patterson Jr., their husband, father, grandfather and pastor who died Saturday after a long illness. He was 76.
“Bishop Patterson taught us how to pray, how to stay together, and the importance of having a strong and loving relationship with the Lord,” his son and presumed successor, Elder Charles Harrison Mason Patterson, told the congregation Sunday morning, his voice alternately choked with emotion and churning with devotion. “It’s tough for our church family. Notice, I didn’t say for the Patterson family, I said for our church family.”
In a week in which local, jurisdictional and national church leaders will meet three separate times to pay tribute to Bishop Patterson at official “homegoing celebrations,” Sunday’s morning service and evening prayers gave those closest to him a chance to grieve as a family.
“He loves us and we loved him,” said Jerrine Montague Simmons, godmother to Bishop Patterson’s son.
“I can hear my cousin now, telling us to ‘look up and live,’” said Rev. Milton Hawkins, pastor of nearby Temple of Deliverance Church of God in Christ, founded by the late Presiding Bishop G.E. Patterson.
Pentecostal Temple was founded in 1942 by Bishop J.O. Patterson Sr., the denomination’s first presiding bishop and son-in-law of Bishop Charles Harrison Mason, COGIC’s founder.
