'American Celebration' Bursts with Red, White and Blue
Portsmouth's Fourth of July celebration doesn't end with the fireworks display that will light up the night sky over South Mill Pond on July 3.
On July 4, Strawbery Banke Museum 's "American Celebration" will take over and offer visitors several options to celebrate the nation's birthday by reconnecting with the city's storied history in fun ways.
The events this year includes a U.S. Naturalization ceremony that will be attended by Gov. John Lynch where immigrants will become U.S. citizens. There will also be live music, kids games, a pie baking contest and plenty of Revolutionary War-era re-enactors who will talk to visitors about life was like in Portsmouth back in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4 in Philadelphia by the Founding Fathers.
Some of the children's games involve old-fashioned potato sack races and Colonial custume relay games.
"An American Celebration at Strawbery Banke is a family event that salutes what Independence Day really means," said Lawrence J. Yerdon, President of Strawbery Banke Museum, in a prepared statement. "From welcoming new citizens to welcoming our neighbors and visitors, An American Celebration is a commemoration of the nation's founding and the parts the people of Portsmouth played, a recognition of past challenges and opportunities and a rousing reaffirmation of what life in these United States means to us today."
In addition to learning about the Revolutionary War, who better to talk about the Civil War than Abraham Lincoln. He will read the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address behind the Lowd House between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. There will also be a Civil War encampment nearby.
The melodic sounds of traditional Irish music and Big Band music will also be performed on the museum grounds.
