DUI crack down over 4th of July holiday -- free cab rides available

As Fourth of July activities kick-off today, law enforcement agencies are taking action to make sure everyone stays safe.

The Maysville Police Department is staging its Police Against Impaired Drivers program Saturday, July 2, and Sunday, July 3.

The PAID program offers free cab rides during holidays for those who have been drinking at local businesses, giving motorists an alternative way of getting home rather than driving drunk.

For the Fourth of July program, the operating hours of the PAID program will be from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., on both Saturday and Sunday.

Guidelines under PAID are limited to one free cab ride from the business establishment to the rider's home and must be within Mason County limits.

Request for cab rides should be made through Geno's Taxi at 606-564-8911.

The program is sponsored by local businesses and Geno's Taxi.

The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety has announced a crack down on drunk drivers over the Fourth of July weekend, which is one of the deadliest holidays of the year when it comes to alcohol impaired traffic fatalities.

KOHS is warning drivers that law enforcement will be out in force during the holiday weekend, cracking down on impaired drivers with aggressive Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest enforcement.

"The Fourth of July is a time most Americans spend celebrating with family and friends, but it is also one of the year's deadliest times on our roadways. So officer from state and local agencies will be out in force cracking down on drunk driving. If you are caught driving impaired, you will be arrested," said Boyd Sigler, KOHS director of Highway Safety Programs.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over the last 25 years show that, on average, nearly half of all deadly traffic crashes over each year's Fourth of July holiday involved some level of alcohol.

In Kentucky last year, 66 alcohol-related crashes occurred during the Fourth of July weekend. Of those crashes, there were 52 injuries and one fatality.

In 2009, 10,839 people were killed in alcohol impaired crashes, accounting for nearly 32 percent of all traffic related fatalities in the United States.

Drunk driving suspected in Mason County crash that killed three ...

No matter how much society and authorities warn others about drunk driving, some individuals still choose to do so. Often, individuals believe that they won't caught because they have most likely driven while intoxicated before, but one mistake or error in judgment while driving can be dangerous and can put the lives of others at risk. A fatal car accident in Mason County, Washington, may be another example of the dangers of drinking and driving.

The fatal accident occurred Sunday morning near State Route 3. According to a spokesman for the Washington State Patrol, troopers responded to the one-car crash after noticing a vehicle that had appeared to have rolled off of the road. Troopers arrived at the scene around 3:08 a.m.

According to police, five men were in the 1990 Chevy Corsica. Three passengers were already dead by the time authorities responded. The three killed in the crash were only 20 years old and 22 years old. The 20-year-old driver was still alive and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. He has been listed in critical condition. Another passenger was also alive and taken to Mason General Hospital for his injuries .

In a report released by the Washington State Patrol, authorities believe that the car was traveling southbound on State Route 3 when the accident occurred. Authorities believe that the driver attempted to make a left hand turn but failed to negotiate the turn properly. Instead, the vehicle ran off of the road and hit a large tree. The car rolled over from the impact and landed back on the wheels.

Police are investigating the accident to see if alcohol was involved. The 20-year-old driver still recovering from the crash could face charges of vehicular homicide.
