Cherokee Regional Medical Center Takes to the Skies

You will soon see a new helicopter in the skies over Cherokee, Iowa. It's a tool that will help cut down on the time it takes for patients to get care and hopefully save lives in the process.

"We will now be hosting a helicopter for air ambulance 24/7," says John Comstock, CEO of the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

CRMC is partnering with Air Methods to bring a new medical transport helicopter to Northwest Iowa.

"Just like any other air emergency transport system all the heroics, all the life saving devices can be done, and will be done, in the air with this chopper," says Comstock.

It's all about speed, bringing medical care directly to the patient and getting it there quickly.

"Instead of responding from the Omaha market and having a delayed response, we felt by being here closer to the calls we could provide better patient care and be closer to the bedside of the patient or the scene," says Matthew Casten, Central Region Business Director for Air Methods.

A pilot, flight nurse, and air paramedic will be stationed in Cherokee, and for good reason, the new Eurocopter EC-130 is like an emergency room in the sky.

"(The new helicopter will have) I.V. pumps, to do critical care medications in route and IV fluids. There will be ventilators that can do pediatric to adult population, we'll have critical care monitors that can do arterial line monitoring," says Lyle Butler, Field Operations Manager for Air Methods.

The new helicopter represents medical technology that is set to save lives all over Siouxland.

"When you look at some hospitals, maybe this person is a traumatic patient or a cardiac patient that needs to get to those specialty services, we're able to get them there quicker," says Butler.

The EC-130 is set to enter service full time on August 1st.

Speaking of speed, the time saved by having that chopper stationed in Cherokee is almost immeasurable, it will be that much closer to the scene when accidents occur.

According to Air Methods officials, the new helicopter can fly to Sioux City in around 25 minutes. Compare that a drive time of around an hour-and-a-half.
