Homeless Person #2: “Don’t they kick you out, though?”
Homeless Person #1: “Yeah, you gotta be one of theirs and register and all that crap.”
Homeless Person #2: “Well, the money isn’t so good here, but you get a lot of help from the city.”
There is a SB Homeless website that posted pretty close to the same views from some guy coming back to SB from his freeloading time in Oregon and noticing there was a changed mood in town since his last wintering over in Santa Barbara visit. His own words written complaining about SB’s less than generous attitude he was now observing on this homeless website for all to see …… and consider.
I don’t think this conversation was faked. Sit at Peets and you will see there is a permanent vagrant crowd there. Some have the means to stay and find homes for themselves on their own dime. Others do not, but instead stay anyway and demand we provide such services for them. Who should we be encouraging to come to Santa Barbara and stay? It is our choice. Easiest solution is stop feeding vagrancy with street donations. It buys booze or drugs and/or booze and drugs. Period.
The tyranny of progressive political correctness did not even allow discussion of turning SB into a homeless magnet with the radical policies the former city council progressives instituted in this town ……. that did indeed turn this city into a homeless magnet. Now the topic cannot be avoided because it is staring us in the face. But we should remember well who prevented this homelss magnet topic from even being considered and ignore them the next time they try their verbal bullying tactics on us again. Voters will have a choice to do just that come this Fall. Turn the clock back to all the failed policies we now have to clean up or keep the progress going now that we are finally starting to clean things up — and at least talk about both sides of these issues instead of being shunted aside in contempt and derision by the former progressives. One of the worst things about term limits is those who put in these policies got to leave before they had to face cleaning them up.
