• Ralston's Independence Day Celebration will fill the city with activity Sunday and Monday.
Sunday's schedule of events starts in Ralston Park, 80th Street and Park Drive. The pie baking contest judging will be at 4:30 (pies must be at the park by 4 p.m.), from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. enjoy a picnic, music, children's games and a pie and ice cream social. A Christian music concert will follow at 7:30 p.m. in the park. If dancing is your thing, you can choose from square dancing from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 76th and Main Streets or a family street dance from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at 77th and Main Streets.
Monday starts off early with the Ralston Independence Day fun run/walk at 7:50 a.m. at Independence Square, 77th and Main Streets. A children's parade, for kids sixth grade and under, will line-up 9:30 a.m. Parade starts at 10 a.m. at 5500 Miller Ave. Enjoy free live music at Independence Square from 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. The big 51st Annual Independence Day Parade starts at 1 p.m. at 80th & Highland Streets and ends at 75th & Main Streets. Fire department waterfights will follow the parade. The Ralston American Legion beer garden will have hamburgers, hotdogs, beer & pop. 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., at 74th & Q Streets. The night ends with a fireworks display lit of from the old Lakeview Golf Course, 72nd & Q Streets.
• The Patriotism Celebration in Geneva, Neb. , will last from Saturday through Monday. Events
Saturday will include a quilters market, flea market, craft show and art show. Also expect free admission to the Geneva Museum in the library basement, free admission to the city swimming pool and a free evening street dance.
More free events will fill Sunday, including courthouse concerts at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., swimming, firetruck rides and train rides. After dark, fireworks will fill the sky at the Fillmore County Fairgrounds.
Two events are planned Monday: a golf tournament and a poker run. A complete schedule for the weekend is available at www.cityofgeneva.org/patriotism.
• Activities will flourish this Independence Day weekend at Fort Kearny (Neb.) State Historical Park. Free wagon rides around the grounds will be offered from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The soldier's camp and living history will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday. The Central Nebraska Woodcarvers will demonstrate wood carving and pine needle basket weaving. Cannon firing will be done each day at 2 p.m. A Nebraska state park sticker is required. A daily park sticker is $4 per vehicle and can be purchased at the visitor center.
