When will Apple iPod the iPhone?
Ever since the iPhone launched four years ago, the question on everyone’s mind has been: When will Apple expand the portfolio to reach into all market segments? I remember thinking in 2007 whether it would be in six months or a year that they would create a “mini”, “nano” and “classic” line-up which served them so well with the iPod.
Apple however took a different approach. To their credit, they focused on the platform and built a consistent experience around a fixed screen size to nurture an ecosystem. They also improved the power of the device so that experience would improve to be better and more robust. In other words, they treated every iPhone as not being good enough, needful of every megahertz of power, every pixel of screen and every minute of battery life. They polished the OS constantly and added APIs by the thousands.
In essence, they acted like a computer software company, not like a “device vendor” or a handset manufacturer which was everyone’s (including mine) frame of reference.
Having expanded from iPhone to iOS and built the platform into non-cellular centric computers like iPad and iPod touch, they clearly showed a nonchalance about the operator channel and the amplification power it offers (an amplification which comes with a hefty price of dependency and strategic illusion.)
But the mind always wonders back to the question of portfolio. Now that the product is maturing, the hardware is getting nearly “good enough”. Perhaps even Apple might now consider letting go of the “frontier” of what’s technologically possible and consider expanding its reach to the broader audiences it has willfully kept out of reach.
And broad they are.
Based on data published by Deutsche Bank and the ITU, we can calculate roughly how many customers Apple’s current iPhone positioning has left unserved. I chose to use pre-paid/post-paid split as a proxy for unaddressed/addressed. This is an imperfect proxy but a pretty good one as most pre-paid subs see a full price for the iPhone (retail around $700 to $1000) vs post-paid customers seeing a price of $200 or below. The $200 happens to be an important psychological price inflection point where volumes increase dramatically.
The first chart shows the global split between pre-/post-paid subscribers as of 2010. Roughly 1.5 billion are post-paid and 3.7 billion are pre-paid. That means that nearly 70 per cent of the world is not being addressed by the iPhone as it currently stands. Put another way, a shift in positioning might result in a 250 per cent increase in addressable market.

The iPod line would be returned to music-only devices (the shuffle and nano), with only two multi-use, touch-based devices to manufacture: the iPhone and iPad. The upshot from a sales POV is that all the users who might have bought the iPod touch will

Perhaps if Apple would update the size if the iPod Touch/iPhone to 4" and/or release an iPad Nano with a 7" screen, we'd have something for the "Not too big, not too small" crowd, but currently iPod Touch is great for portable gaming,
Does the Music (née iPod) app in iOS 5 have a "shuffle by album" feature, rather than just "shuffle by song" like currently? On my old first generation iPod nano, or in iTunes, I can play albums at random. This is not possible on my iPhone.

I only have a 1st generation ipod nano, the battery is almost completely dead and I have to use it with a ipod speaker, and the last 13" white plastic macbook using the powerpc CPU.. Anyway I really encourage folks to try out TF especially there is
Apple iPod nano 8 GB Graphite (6th Generation) NEWEST MODEL ...
This review is from: Apple iPod nano 16 GB Blue (6th Generation) NEWEST MODEL (Electronics)
The iPod Nano update on September 1, 2010 is arguably the most dramatic since the iPod Nano moniker was introduced by Apple five years ago. Several colors are being offered in both 8 GB & 16 GB capacities. More than an update, this is a new product that simply retains the iPod Nano name. It gains a significant feature, but loses several others. The huge deal is the touch interface on the newest iPod Nano. iPod Nano users will now be “touching,” their music as iPod Touch and iPhone users have before them. The click wheel is gone. To find your music, you select a category from the Nano’s menu such as “Playlists,” or “Artists,” and select from there. Less convenient or more convenient than a click wheel? Honestly, in this area equal. The screen is indeed tiny, but not unusable. FM Radio has been retained as well as the Appropriateness aspects with the ability to use Nike + or simply the built in pedometer. But, the form factor will be a foremost benefit for those working out with the Nano. The previous Nano required an armband to keep it on you while working out, jogging, or the like. Not always comfortable, an additional deprivation, etc. But, with this new tiny, square form factor that need is gone. Now, we can simply “clip,” the Nano onto us, with the built in clip, and run to our listening make pleased. A larger deal than you might reckon. The downside? Facial appearance have been removed from Nano. The screen is much smaller than the previous generation. Therefore, playback of video make pleased from iTunes is gone. Nano no longer plays video, which was a feature added three years ago. Secondly, last year, Nano added a tiny video camera to record low feature video, which could be played back on the Nano’s screen or synced with iTunes and viewed on your computer. That feature is gone too. The device is too tiny now for a camera or to watch video. This new generation iPod Nano has many exciting new facial appearance, but buyers must be aware that it is no longer a video player. It is something new. Those wishing to play video on an iPod must point out an iPod Touch. My opinion on this change? Honestly, did I ever watch video on the iPod Nano’s screen? No. For me, while they kept trying to make the screen larger, it was simply too tiny to delight in more than a once a year video. Likewise, the camera was simply not high sufficient feature to keep yourself entertained by using on a regular basis. It became a feature unused by many. The iPod Nano has changed and gone back to being an exceptional music player. There is nothing here you do not need to delight in music. But, the show and touch interface brings the 21st century “touch,” that Apple has made so well loved to a more affordable device. The touch function will be limited here to simply selecting songs or bringing up the clock, but nevertheless, touch has made its way to the Nano. I’m most thankful that the Nano has indeed retained the DOCK CONNECTOR. The dock connector is key to use with iPod accessories such as docks, speaker docks, and built in car iPod connectors. The nano is so diminutive that if you plug it into the factory iPod kit of an automobile, the cable’s dock connector will look near larger than the Nano itself. Not a negative, just droll. Nevertheless, the dock connector is there, and you will be able to use the device in such applications, and that was a significant choice by Apple. Users want and need the dock connector. It is there on this iPod Nano, but subdue missing from the Shuffle due to its even more diminutive size. This 16 GB translation is the largest size Apple offers in the Nano. It offers no additional functionality over the 8GB, but facial appearance twice the storage. Point out the one best for you. 16 GB is fantastic if you have a large music collection. We must all remember though that with Nano no longer doing Video or Storing Pictures, the storage is exclusively for music. This makes 8 GB and 16 GB more appropriate size offerings as music takes up much less storage than video. Overall, Apple has removed video (both playback and recording) from this iPod Nano. But, it’s an equalling excellent music player. Steering of music is now completed via touch, which works effectively despite the tiny screen. It’s really hard to believe so much can fit into such a tiny device and I believe everyone will be a bit shocked when they open up the Nano the first time and see it’s size yet primary function as an effective music player retained. The newest Nano brings a near Shuffle like size, but yet retains the functionality (touch, clip, dock connector) that serious music lovers and those who use the Nano while working out, demand.
