St. Michael Family Cuts It Short for Locks of Love
Generosity of spirit – and hair – flow freely in the extended Dupay family of St. Michael, Minnesota. Recently 6-year-old Julia, her aunt Molly Ripe of Big Lake, Minn., and Grandma Betsy Dupay also of Big Lake, Minn., willingly had their crowning glories cut off to help others. The trio donated their hair to Locks of Love - a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21, suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
The need is great because typical wigs are fitted for adult heads and not only tend to have age inappropriate styles for children, they often do not reliably stay on the child’s head during swimming or recess. Locks of Love specializes in the highest quality custom made, vacuum wigs just for children. All wigs are free of charge to those in need and typically retail for $3,500 to $6,000 a piece. Children can apply for a new wig every 18 months, but wigs cannot be reused since they are custom fit for that particular child’s head.
Julia’s mother Amy, herself a past donor to Locks off Love, thought this would be a great way to do something for others, and at the same time deal with the inevitable knotty hair issue that plagues little girls with long hair – especially in the summer.
Asked if she ever had to sit in front of mom while she worked through painful tangles, Julia wrinkles up her nose and confirms, “Yes”!
Julia, her aunt, and Grandmother all decided months ago to grow their hair out for this purpose. Between the three of them,they donated more than 30 inches.
For Aunt Molly – this was her third donation in recent history.
Julia was preparing with her aunt and grandma for the big day to come, and planned on June for specific reasons.
“She had several big dance shows with Kay Marie and Carol’s dance in Albertville recently, and her birthday was coming up. We thought we might get her ears pierced for her birthday but either way, we knew we definitely needed to keep her hair long until after her dance shows. For her dances, she had to spend the day in spongy rollers to get curls. That wasn’t easy!” Amy shares.
Julia smiles as she sports newly pierced ears – a recent birthday gift. Her new shorter hair-style shows off her pierced ears and adorable smile well.
For donation day, the family headed over to Simonson’s in Elk River – where the cut and style are free if you are donating to Locks of Love.
